Ukiah's Climate Resilient Forests Project

The City of Ukiah has identified a number of ideal planting sites, both within the public right-of-way, city-owned property, and privately-owned property. These sites include existing tree wells with no established trees, tree wells that have been filled or paved, sections of sidewalk with sufficient size and width to accommodate street trees, empty planting areas or planting areas with some vegetation but no trees, and other areas including parks. The project sites are distributed across a highly developed and urbanized area that has been identified by the city as deficient in tree canopy. The project involved the planting a diverse mix of 722 trees within opportunity sites consistent with City guidelines. Preparation of certain areas will require removal of sidewalk and excavation of soils. The city, therefore, expects the use of heavy equipment including a backhoe, loader, and jackhammer to prepare planting areas. No grading or other construction activities are required to support the project.
