AI Contract Overview
This contract aims to support advanced research training programs for scientists from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) focusing on infectious diseases that pose potential threats to the U.S. and offer unique research opportunities not typically available domestically. These programs must align with the mission of at least one NIH Institute, Center, or Office and provide comprehensive, long-term research training complemented by short-term activities. Key components include intensive mentorship, training in data-driven science, professional development, responsible research conduct, and biosafety practices. Research projects are expected to build on NIH-funded studies, enhancing international collaborations and investments. The initiative emphasizes strengthening partnerships between U.S. and LMIC researchers to improve understanding of pathogen transmission and pathology, and to develop diagnostic, preventive, or treatment methods, particularly for low-resource settings. Funded projects are designed to leverage unique environmental conditions and populations exposed to these diseases, thereby addressing global health challenges while protecting U.S. public health. The program is managed by the National Institutes of Health within the Department of Health and Human Services, offering opportunities for research training aligned with global infectious disease priorities.

Full Description
This initiative supports rigorous advanced research training programs for low- and middle-income country (LMIC) scientists on infectious diseases that pose a potential threat to the U.S. and present special opportunities for research that are not readily available in the U.S., such as unique resources, exposed or infected populations, or environmental conditions that impact transmission. Applications must be relevant to the mission of at least one of the participating NIH Institutes, Centers, or Offices. Each program will provide long-term research training, along with complementary short-term training activities, and will include intensive mentorship and relevant training in data-driven science, professional skills, responsible conduct of research, and biosafety. Trainee research projects will leverage NIH-funded studies and thus will enhance NIH international investments. Research training programs will strengthen collaborations between U.S. and LMIC researchers to better understand the transmission and pathology of pathogens and to develop diagnostic, preventive or treatment interventions, especially those suited to low resource settings globally.
