MAGIC - Microgrids for Advanced Grid Interaction and Control

The MAGIC - Microgrids for Advanced Grid Interaction and Control project, managed by the California Energy Commission, focuses on software integration, configuration, and controller interoperability. The scope includes implementing communication protocols IEEE 2030.5 and IEEE 1815.2, conducting load management testing, and performing field demonstrations on existing photovoltaic, battery energy-storage, and microgrid control systems. The project is categorized as a forecast under NAICS code 541715 and is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act as it involves minor alterations and data collection. Field demonstrations will take place at two specific sites: the Tomales West Community Microgrid, featuring 297 kW of solar PV and a 326 kW / 1,306 kWh battery system, and the East Los Angeles Community Microgrid, which includes 1.6 MW of solar PV and a 3 MW / 12 MWh battery system. Key objectives include collecting data on distribution-capacity utilization, feeder load, renewable hosting capacity, and avoided capacity upgrades.
