AI Contract Overview
The SPARK-EHS initiative by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences aims to expand access to environmental health research training by supporting institutions that have not received an NIEHS T32 grant in the past five years. It seeks to establish innovative, research-focused training programs for predoctoral trainees that align with NIEHS’s mission to understand how environmental factors influence biological systems across the lifespan and to translate findings into improved public health outcomes. The initiative offers a two-phase funding structure: an initial UE5 phase to develop the training program and a subsequent T32 phase to implement it, ensuring institutions build sustainable capacity in environmental health sciences research. This is a limited competition forecast with applications subject to standard NIH peer review, where only high-quality, meritorious proposals will be funded. Eligibility is restricted to institutions meeting specific criteria regarding prior T32 funding history, and the program does not allow clinical trials. The opportunity is open to eligible organizations through a formal application process, with all details accessible via the NIH Grants.gov portal. Inquiries should be directed to the designated point of contact at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

Full Description
The goal of the Supporting Programs to Advance Research Knowledge in Environmental Health Sciences (SPARK-EHS) initiative is to extend the institutional, geographical, and research reach of NIEHS training. This initiative proposes to launch new and innovative environmental health training programs for research-focused predoctoral trainees at institutions that have not had a funded NIEHS T32 during the preceding five years. Training programs must be responsive to the mission of NIEHS, which is to support research on how the environment affects biological systems across the lifespan, and to translate this knowledge to reduce disease and promote human health. NIEHS will provide support for a two-phased award to eligible institutions to develop (UE5) and implement (T32) training programs specifically oriented to the research interests of NIEHS.
This is a Forecast for a Limited Competition that will invite application(s) from eligible organization(s) to apply. Please see Eligibility Section for additional information. In accordance with NIH standard peer-review processes, the application(s) will be peer-reviewed, and only meritorious application(s) will be considered for funding.
