The project is located on Alameda Creek (Zone, 5, Line A) flood control channel in the vicinity of the BART Weir, in the City of Fremont. The Alameda Creek fish ladder was completed in 2022. After the winter storms of 2024, the fish ladder structure and the downstream resting pool were filled in with sediment from the storms. The District proposes to desilt approximately 1,057 cubic yards (CY) of material from the ladder structure and approximately 2,897 CY of material from the downstream resting pool area. A total of approximately 3,953 CY is proposed for maintenance desilting. A cofferdam would be installed upstream to divert nuisance flows during the maintenance desilting activities and water will be re-routed around the work area using automatically actuated pump and pipeline, or by gravity flow. Cofferdams are anticipated to be gravel filled, structural dams and augmented with sandbags, if necessary. Upon completion of the project, cofferdams will be removed from the channel and normal water flow established. Sediment will be removed with excavating equipment and hauled to an approved upland disposal site. All work will be performed on Flood Control District Properties and easements. The purpose of the project is to restore capacity to the fish ladder and resting pool area, and to allow continued safe upstream migration of steelhead, Coho and Chinook salmon to reach upstream spawning rearing habitat.
