Requirement: Replace damaged timber bridge piles. At Bents 5 and 6, one of the three supporting timber piles at each bent exhibits severe deterioration near the groundline. Portions of the outer shell were removed to reveal substantial section loss of the interior of the pile. At Bent 5, Pile 2 the interior section loss is estimated at 75% with only the outer ¾" shell remaining. Hollow sounding timber suggests the deterioration extends 4 ft high. At Bent 6, Pile 1 the interior section loss is estimated at 85% with only the outer ½" shell remaining. Hollow sounding timber suggests the deterioration extends 2 ft high. At Bent 2, Pile 2 has been retrofitted with a square timber column. The top of the column is non-load bearing with the cap. There is up to a ¾" wide gap between the top of the column and bottom of the bent cap. Justification: On August 13, 2022, Marine Solutions, Inc. (Marine Solutions) performed a routine inspection on Bridge 7454 located at SUBASE Bangor. As per the subject contract Statement of Work, Section F3, this correspondence is to report a safety related deficiency found during the field inspection that requires immediate follow-up action. Bridge 1WA7454 consists of timber beams supporting a timber plank deck carrying vehicular traffic over a ravine. The superstructure is supported by six timber bents comprised of three timber piles each. Inventory direction for this structure is from the south and the west. Marine Solutions has recommended immediate closure of bridge until repairs can be made.
