I-40 Bridge and Rock Slope Protection Replacements

The I-40 Bridge and Rock Slope Protection Replacements project, managed by Caltrans District 8, involves the restoration of rock slope protection at the Ardis Ditch, Tank Tower Ditch, and Homer Wash bridges, as well as the full replacement of the Woods Wash bridges. Located in San Bernardino County on Interstate 40 between Post Mile R104.6 and R120.5, the scope of work includes modifying drainage systems and streambeds at four specific locations. Key activities consist of removing existing vegetation and rock slope protection, constructing temporary access roads, and installing new partially-grouted rock slope protection. The project is subject to strict environmental compliance under the California Environmental Quality Act and the Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreement. Critical requirements include the development of a Lead Compliance Plan and a Traffic Management Plan, as well as adherence to NESHAP notifications for hazardous air pollutants. Significant biological protections are in place for the desert kit fox, requiring preconstruction surveys by a qualified biologist within 30 days of ground-breaking, the establishment of 200-foot non-disturbance buffers for natal dens from February to June, and immediate work stoppage if a fox is sighted on-site. The project has been certified as having no significant environmental effect following the completion of a Mitigated Negative Declaration.
