San Bernadino Shade Equity Project

The San Bernardino Shade Equity Project is led by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and involves a partnership between TreePeople, the City of San Bernardino, and the Rialto Unified School District. The project focuses on increasing canopy cover through the planting of 750 number 15 trees within San Bernardino and the distribution of 450 number 15 trees to the Rialto Unified School District for installation on school campuses. All selected tree species must be low maintenance and drought tolerant. To support these efforts, the project includes a community engagement component consisting of youth activities, meetings, and 30 volunteer tree planting events. Administratively, the project is managed by CAL FIRE headquarters in Sacramento. From an environmental standpoint, the project is classified under a Class 4 Categorical Exemption for minor alterations to land per Section 15304, indicating that no significant adverse environmental impacts are expected.
