Trail Network Improvement Grants

The California Tahoe Conservancy is providing two grants of up to 115,000 dollars each, totaling 230,000 dollars, to the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association and the Tahoe Rim Trail Association. These funds are designated for trail enhancement work on USDA Forest Service land within the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, specifically covering the California side of the basin including South Lake Tahoe and unincorporated areas of El Dorado and Placer counties. The project involves hiring professional trail crews to improve up to 40 miles of existing trails during the 2026 and 2027 summer seasons. The scope of work focuses on environmental sustainability and public recreation through the construction of erosion control features such as rock walls, armored drainages, and stream crossings. Additional activities include clearing overgrowth in burn areas and improving trail width, tread, and wayfinding to discourage the creation of unauthorized user trails. All improvements will be conducted within existing trail corridors. The project was approved by the Conservancy on September 18, 2025, and is classified as exempt under California environmental regulations due to the minor nature of the alterations and structures involved.
