Look up a NAICS code by keyword

  1. Open the NAICS directory.
  2. Type a keyword or a code in the search box, for example "software" or "541511". With no search, the page shows Common NAICS Codes and Browse All NAICS Codes.
  3. Read the description and the Size standard on each card. The size standard is a revenue cap, such as $34.0M, or an employee count, such as 750 employees.
  4. Open a code to see its full page.

What a NAICS code page shows

  • Market statistics, such as the active contracts and the total obligations in the last 12 months.
  • A summary of the code that artificial intelligence (AI) writes, labeled AI Summary.
  • A Small Business Size Standard card. It shows the cap, a plain-language explanation, and any exceptions with their own cap. It also shows the date that the SBA table took effect.
  • The Overview, Contracts, and Contractors Awarded tabs.

Look up a NAICS code by company name

The keyword lookup finds codes by industry. To find the NAICS codes that a specific company uses, search the CLEATUS contractor directory.

  1. Open the contractor directory.
  2. Search the company by name, Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), or Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) code.
  3. Open its profile. The NAICS Codes card lists the codes that the company registered, and marks the primary code.
  4. On the Overview tab, the Awards by NAICS chart shows the codes of the contracts that the company won.

Use this lookup to answer two common questions:

  • "What NAICS code does my competitor bid under?" Look up the competitor and compare its codes with yours. You can find a code that the rest of your market uses and that you do not have.
  • "What NAICS code did this company register in SAM.gov?" The profile shows the registered codes. Use it to confirm that a partner or a subcontractor has the classification that you expect.

A company almost always has more than one NAICS code: one primary code plus each additional code that it registered. No single code is "correct" for a business, so review the full list.

Use NAICS codes in CLEATUS

  • In the CLEATUS dashboard, open Market Intelligence > NAICS Codes to see the same directory.
  • The size standard also shows under the NAICS code on contract, pursuit, and award pages.
  • Ask the CLEATUS agent to suggest NAICS codes from a description of your work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find a NAICS code by company name?

Yes. Use the contractor directory, not the keyword lookup. Search the company, open its profile, and read the NAICS Codes card.

How many NAICS codes can a business have?

A business can have as many codes as truly describe its work. In SAM.gov, a business selects one primary NAICS code and any number of additional codes. Size standards apply per code. A company can be small under one code and other than small under another.

Where do I find my own NAICS code?

Your registered codes are in your SAM.gov entity registration. If you have a CLEATUS account, open Capture Profile > Company Details and click Import from UEI to bring them in. If you choose codes for the first time, use the keyword lookup above. Check the size standard for each code before you register.

Do NAICS codes change?

Yes. The NAICS system changes every five years, most recently in 2022. Codes can be merged, split, or renumbered, so check your registration after each revision.
